New England is a piece of Europe in the United States, in the northeast of the country. Its six states: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut are steeped in tradition and modernity. New England is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Canada, and New York State. Its name derives from having been the geographical place where the first British settlers (Pilgrim Fathers or Pilgrim Fathers) who arrived in North America stayed, from the landing of the Mayflower ship in 1620.
America was born in New England. There the first works of American literature and philosophy emerged and it was home to the beginnings of free public education. In the 19th century, it played a prominent role in the movement to abolish slavery in the United States. It was the first region of the country to be transformed by the Industrial Revolution.
Today, New England is a symbol of education, high technology, and medicine. Its universities, historical cities and monuments fight to be the cultural capital of the West.
